Tom Rand

Environmental Sustainability Expert | Venture Capitalist,
Speaking at: Chair’s Welcome Dinner

Tom Rand’s ambition is to help bring clean technology to life. A global thought leader with a recognized record of extraordinary achievement in the promotion of a low carbon economy, Rand is a green entrepreneur, investor, advisor, and author. He challenges his audiences to recognize that there are concrete solutions to the climate change crisis, and he is widely sought after for his ability to take enormously complicated issues and reformulate them in ways that engage his listeners.

Currently, Rand is managing partner of the privately backed cleantech venture fund ArcTern Ventures and a senior advisor to MaRS Cleantech in Toronto, where he helps the next generation of cleantech companies grow to global leadership. As well, he was founder and director of Voice Courier Incorporated (a global telecoms software company); founder of VCI Green Funds (a seed and venture capital fund in the low- carbon sector); the co-developer of Planet Traveler, the “greenest hotel in North America”; and he sits on the Board of Directors of a number of cleantech companies and NGOs. He is also a member of Ontario’s Climate Action Group, providing input to the Ontario government’s climate policy.

He is also the author of Kick the Fossil Fuel Habit: 10 Clean Technologies to Save Our World, and more recently of the national bestseller Waking the Frog; Solutions to our Climate Change Paralysis. He has published numerous articles that have appeared in The Globe and Mail, Canadian Business, Clean Energy North America, and The Mark News, to name a few. He is also a regular contributor on CBC’s The Exchange with Amanda Lang.

In 2008, Rand was awarded an Action Canada Fellowship, and was project manager of the influential Green Bonds public policy team.
