Deciphering Volcanic Rocks and their Environments with Applications for Mineral Exploration (SC3)

Virtual / Tickets Required

Dr. Stephen J. Piercey
Department of Earth Sciences, Memorial University of Newfoundland

Dr. Harold L. Gibson
Mineral Exploration Research Centre and Harquail School of Earth Sciences, Laurentian University.

The course will cover the basics of volcanic processes in submarine and, to a lesser extent subaerial environments; the collection of volcanic facies and stratigraphic information using field and drill core data; integrating volcanic information with other tools (e.g., hyperspectral data, lithogeochemistry); understanding volcanic processes and their role in the localization of magmatic, magmatic-hydrothermal, and hydrothermal mineralization (volcanic environment delineation); the role of volcanic facies and architecture and their impacts on hydrothermal footprint geometry; and specific case studies examples from magmatic Ni-Cu sulfide, epithermal Au, and volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits.
